An overabundance of glucose (>140 mg/dL) in the blood. Often a result of diabetes mellitus.
Assessment Findings
- Polydipsia
- Polyuria, Glycosuria, Ketonuria
- Polyphagia (if insulin is absent)
- Dry skin; Warm, flushed skin
- Hunger
- Blurred Vision, Soft Eyeballs
- Drowsiness, Altered Level of Consciousness, Nausea and Vomiting
- Tachycardia, Abdominal Pain
- Kussmaul’s Breathing, Fruity Breath Odor (usually related to DKA)
Management
- Establish and maintain a patent airway
- Oxygen Therapy
- NSS + Regular Insulin IV
- D10W if glucose reaches 250 mg/dL.
- KCl on slow IV once urine output is adequate
